Barbara Davis Gallery is proud to announce a three-person exhibition for Andrea Bianconi, Romance, Ruth Shouval, Settle, and Anthony Thompson Shumate, Sweetly Broken, opening Friday, October 12, 2012, with an artist's reception from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. This exhibition includes sculptures and ink drawings on paper by internationally known artist Andrea Bianconi, unique relief prints on paper by Israeli artist Ruth Shouval, and paintings on birch plywood and an interactive sculpture by Houston artist Anthony Thompson Shumate.
Andrea Bianconi's exhibition Romance consists of a series of new works titled Love Story, which insinuate simplicity and complexity simultaneously as they illustrate the dichotomy between intimacy and extroversion. Romance includes drawings in ink on paper, sculpture, and an animation video that speaks about the construction and deconstruction of love. The intimism of Andrea Bianconi's work is an observatory of the dynamics of introspection in relation to the observation of the "other." In his latest series, Bianconi strives to transcend the self and move toward the idea of the "other," while exploring the process of multiplication, or the multiplicity of one. Romance is an amplification of us as it demonstrates the everlasting inner struggle and infatuation we have with love.
In her exhibition Settle, Ruth Shouval utilizes the symbol of the home to describe the patterns of our lives in a way that is both poetic and profound. From a formalist perspective, Shouval's latest series of prints mimic the vacillation between calm and chaos, as structured lines are shattered and then refigured. Shouval's metaphors emerge from a private place and reflect her own journey through life, yet they also function on a universal level. Her print Meditation encourages us, as viewers, to look within ourselves to find home, stability, and comfort. The structure of the labyrinth adds another dimension to the symbol of the home, as it guides us to our destination, while leaving us bewildered at times. Settle presents a powerful collection of Shouval's latest works, as it invites the viewer to contemplate the impact of symbolism and how it plays a role in our everyday lives.
Anthony Thompson Shumate examines the process of creativity in his exhibition Sweetly Broken, as he presents a collection of recent works that pushes the boundaries and explores new mediums, presentation, and concepts. In his textual paintings, Shumate successfully transforms and revives the quintessential still life by intertwining language and art. Rather than representing an object, Shumate allows the viewer to take part in the creative process. This is also true for his interactive sculpture, in which viewers can relate to the art on a tangible level. A faint thread of truth and irony connects these latest works in Sweetly Broken, making it a clever, playful, and sophisticated exhibition.
