November 16, 2012 - January 5, 2013
Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Realms Uncharted, featuring work by Paul Fleming, Robert Kelly, Jay Shinn, and Julie Soefer, opening Friday, November 16, 2012, with an artist reception from 6:30 - 8:30pm. Realms Uncharted includes site-specific installations by Paul Fleming, mixed media paintings by Robert Kelly, a light projection and series of drawings by Jay Shinn, and new photographs by Julie Soefer.
Inspired by the form and structure of quotidian objects, Paul Fleming creates spectacular site-specific installations that consist of vibrantly colored resin elements, which are multiplied and carefully arranged, bursting forth with energy and movement. These enticing installations explore the relationship between part and whole, as each individual object becomes increasingly profound once proliferated to produce an overall unique formation. Through close attention to color, material, and form, Fleming's site-specific installations appear to vibrate off the wall, transforming the existing space which they occupy into something extraordinary.
Robert Kelly's meticulously executed mixed media paintingsThicket XCII, Thicket Assemblage XCI and XCII, are reminiscent of the past as they examine revolutionary art movements, such as the Bauhaus and De Stijl, through color, material, and design. Kelly's thicket paintings are dense and mysterious, as his repetitive marks obstruct the view to what lies beneath, memories of the past forever frozen in time. Underneath the polished ivory surface are collaged vintage posters, documents, and archival newsprint, which together create a distinct and captivating texture upon the canvas. Kelly's artistic practice focuses on refined abstraction, which is evident in these carefully constructed paintings.
Influenced by the concept of Op-Art, Jay Shinn's latest work incorporates various mediums, including light, projection, neon, and spray paint, which all in all create mesmerizing illusions that invite the viewer to experience art on an entire new level. Shinn's vividly painted site-specific installation Triple-Fold appears three-dimensional due to the combination of paint and projected light. Geometric abstraction is prominent in Shinn's work, and the process of his creativity is outlined in a series of intimate drawings and studies also in the exhibition. Through a careful manipulation of numerous materials, Shinn takes the viewer on a visual journey by playing with the idea of perception and space.
Julie Soefer's new series of photographs explore the concept of immediacy and the notion that a moment can best be captured when acting without premeditation. Abstracted and blurred, Soefer's photographs of once recognizable locations become obscured, allowing the viewer to form his or her own interpretation of the subject. This latest series of photographs focuses on the ideal blend of motion, color, and light, which together evoke a sense of familiarity, but are at the same time visually captivating. Large in scale and printed on matte Plexiglas, these photographs lend themselves to an alluring texture that is reinforced by Soefer's unconventional and truly unique process.
