Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce Allusions on Place, a solo exhibition by Danish artist Mie Olise Kjærgaard, opening Friday, May 1, 2015, with an artist’s reception from 6:30 – 8:30pm. This exhibition is on view May 1 through June 12, 2015. Allusions on Place is Olise’s fourth solo exhibition at Barbara Davis Gallery.
Mie Olise’s Allusions on Place features new paintings that examine the visual narratives behind man-made constructions and architectural spaces. The paintings unfold a fictional history, as the subjects portrayed are inspired by existing abandoned places that Olise reimagines. Ladders suspend from floating tree houses and wooden ships, inviting the viewer to step into the artist’s dreamlike world and awaken the seemingly vacant structures. From interiors of once grandiose theaters to wide-angle panoramas of flooded woods, Olise introduces a broader spectrum of context to her audience with this new body of work. Despite the immediacy of form, the paintings are composed of loose brushstrokes and unrestrained drips. Olise carefully balances representation with abstraction, so the viewer can grasp the tangibility of the memory depicted as well as formulate a personal interpretation.
