Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce Fields and Flowers, a solo-exhibition by Chicago-based artist Judy Ledgerwood, opening Friday, May 31, 2013, with an artist reception from 6:30 – 8:30PM.
Judy Ledgerwood’s Fields and Flowers is comprised of new paintings that address the relationship between flat pictorial space and actual physical space. Within the exhibition is a selection of ‘flowers’, an iconographic singular motif as well as the familiar quatrefoil form expanded into color field paintings utilizing repetition of a hand-drawn pattern. These paintings are activated by color interactions between optically dynamic hues, with large paintings divided into architectural bands or zones. At times, color interactions are subtle, while at other times boldly unsettling causing retinal fatigue or after-images. Visual order is disrupted by the clearly hand-drawn, non-mechanical nature of the repeated motifs and is further undone by color interactions. The paintings can be seen anew through the effects of ambient light or viewer movement. All these effects activate the space in front of the canvas. The shape of the painting itself—as defined by the edge that is painted, rather than the edge of the canvas—asserts the primacy of the painting over the architectural space. Subtle shifts in hue from within the narrow range of a single tone, or variations in surface from matte to glossy, reflect or absorb changing light and alter the initial perception. While Ledgerwood’s paintings initially appear strongly graphic, a number of painterly devices work to complicate the viewing experience upon second look.
Fields and Flowers opens Friday, May 31, with an opening artist reception from 6:30 – 8:30PM. This exhibition is on view May 31, 2013 through July 5, 2013. For more information, please contact Barbara Davis Gallery at 713.520.9200 or info@barbaradavisgallery.com.
