Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce a new solo-exhibition by London-based artist Danny Rolph entitled Paradiso, opening Friday, October 10, 2014, with an artist reception from 6:30 - 8:30pm. This exhibition is on view October 10 - November 15, 2014. There will be a discussion between Danny Rolph and Matthew Lennon, Director of Civic Art + Design at the Houston Arts Alliance, on Saturday, October 11, from 6 – 7pm.
London-based artist Danny Rolph presents a new body of work made over the last year. His continued commitment to uncompromising painting is apparent in these new works and across all the surfaces he uses. The varied pictorial languages evident in Paradiso are populated with Pop Art references and gestural marks located in sunsets inspired by the skies he has experienced of West Texas and Baroque Venetian painting in particular. Shapes that are sharp, delicate, clean, irregular, and emotive find themselves reproduced in fields of vivid color that are simultaneously disruptive and cohesive. These paintings (some multi-paneled) remain spatially indulgent and adhere to a vocabulary indebted to the power of visual discovery.
About the artist:
Rolph has an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art, London and was awarded the Rome Scholarship at the British School at Rome. He is a Professor of Fine Art at Bucks New University and is a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Rolph's recent solo-exhibitions include 'Atelier' at E.S.A.D. Valence, France, 2013; 'Kissing balloons in the jungle' at Poppy Sebire, London, 2012; 'Duke of Burgundy', Barbara Davis Gallery, 2012; and 'ten minutes from now' at Eden Rock Gallery, St Barths, Caribbean 2011. His work is represented in many international collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and theTate Gallery, London.
