DANIEL McFARLANE: What I Saw
December 9, 2011 - January 5, 2012
December 9, 2011 - January 5, 2012
Barbara Davis Gallery proudly announces the opening of Daniel McFarlane: What I Saw, on Friday, December 9, 2011, with a reception for the artist from 6:30 – 8:30pm.
McFarlane’s exhibition of new paintings continues the dialog of abstraction through a tenuous balance of improvisation and control. The briliantly toned paintings describe moments of encounter between amorphous forms and rigid structures. The forms, which seemingly drip and ooze of their own accord, are actually carefully cultivated and painstakingly transplanted while the dimensional structures with which they interact are created in a trompe l’oeil fashion. McFarlane’s exploration of color, shape, texture, and superimposition yield paintings of highly charged, dynamic tension.
Daniel McFarlane was born in Houston, Texas, where he currently lives and works. He earned a BFA in studio art from Sam Houston State University and was awarded an Alumni Fellowship to attend the University of Florida, and completed an MFA in painting and drawing. McFarlane’s paintings have been exhibited nationally in New York, the Smithsonian Institution and JFK Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Faber Birren National Color Award Show. His work is featured in New American Paintings artist book; MFA annual No. 87, West No. 96, and blog. What I Saw marks his first solo-exhibition with Barbara Davis Gallery.
