Anthony Thompson Shumate: Novus Ordo Seclorum
May 21 - June 20, 2009
Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of Texas artist Anthony Thompson Shumate. An adjunct professor of sculpture at the University of Houston, Shumate is the new addition to Barbara Davis Gallery’s roster of artists. This inaugural solo exhibition will include sculpture, drawing, performance, multimedia installation and a wall drawing.
Shumate has an extraordinary ability to toy with the viewer’s perception, it becomes difficult to recognize what is authentic and what is a part of the illusion. In the duality of beauty and commentary, we arrive at the ultimate goal of Novus Ordo Seclorum (Latin for ‘New Order of the Ages’)”.
"I believe Art is a chess game. In this post-post modern world of contemporary art we must consider all of the "pieces" that are in play and how our strategy of work fits into the field of play- in aesthetics, concept, and execution."
