Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce Alongside, a group exhibition comprised of nine regional, national, and international artists. The exhibition opens Friday, May 30, with an opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This exhibition is on view through July 3, 2014.
Alongside features new paintings by Ditte Ejlerskov (Sweden), Robert Kelly (New York), Mie Olise (Denmark), and Matthew Satz (New York), a site-specific installation by Paul Fleming (Houston), sculpture by Joe Mancuso (Houston), and a concrete collage on panel by Troy Stanley (Houston). This exhibition also includes a ten-part monoprint by Israeli-born Yizhak Elyashiv (Providence) and a large-scale print installation by Ruth Shouval (Houston).

About the Artists:
Ditte Ejlerskov lives and works in Malmö, SE. She received her MFA from the Malmö Art Academy, SE in 2009. Her residencies include The Danish Arts Council at Cité des Arts, Paris, FR and the Centre of Contemporary Art, Andratx, SP. Recent selected solo exhibitions and projects include: Elastic Gallery, Malmö, SE; Crystal Contemporary, Stockholm, SE; and LARMgalleri, Copenhagen, DK (solo 2011 and book project 2012). Her two-person and group exhibitions include Amos Anderson Art Museum, Helsinki, FI; Uppsala Konstmuseum, Uppsala, SE; and the Center of Contemporary Art, Andratx, SP.

Yizhak Elyashiv lives in Providence, RI, where he works and teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. He received his BFA from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Jerusalem in 1990 and his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. His solo exhibitions include NAGA Gallery, Boston, MA; Spheris Gallery, Hanover, NH; Lenore Gray Gallery, Providence, RI; and Reeves Contemporary, NY. His group exhibitions include the Newport Museum of Art, RI; the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Milwaukee, WI; RISD Museum of Art, Providence, RI; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Tweed Museum of Art, Duluth, MN; and the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH. His work is in several public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Boston Public Library, Cleveland Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Israel Museum, British Museum, and the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University.

Paul Fleming lives and works in Houston, Texas. He received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1995. Robert Kelly lives and works in New York. He received his BA from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1978. Joe Mancuso lives and works in Houston, Texas. He received his MFA from Indiana University and BFA from Colorado State University. Mie Olise lives and works between Copenhagen and New York. She received her Masters of Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins - School of Art, London and holds a Masters of Architecture from the Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark. She studied at Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting, US and in 2010 she was an Artist in Residence at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), New York. Solo exhibitions include Honor Fraser, LA, Nikolaj Contemporary Art Centre, DK; Skive New Museum of Art, DK (with an accompanying catalog); Torrance Art Museum, CA, Philara Sammlung eV, Dusseldorf, Barbara Davis Gallery, Houston, TX and DUVE Berlin. She has an upcoming solo exhibition at Museo de Arte Acarigua-Araure in Venezuela and will participate in the group show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Utah June of 2014. Olise has exhibited at the 10th Istanbul Biennale as well as the Liverpool Biennale, the Athens Video Art Festival and the Damascus Video Art Festival. Her work has been reviewed by ArtForum, Art Review, FlashArt International, and Magazinet Kunst.

Matthew Satz lives and works in Manhattan Beach, CA and Amagansett, NY. He received his BFA from Brandeis University in 1993 and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York. Ruth Shouval lives and works in Houston, Texas. She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem, Israel, and received her Masters Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. She also attended the Glassel School of Art and was a participant in the first PrintHouston Biennial. Shouval's two-person exhibitions and group exhibitions include Sol Koffler Gallery, Providence, Rhode Island; Sarah Doyle Gallery, Providence, Rhode Island; Museum of Printing History, Houston, Texas; Woods Gerry Gallery, Providence, Rhode Island; and Barbara Davis Gallery, Houston, Texas. She also has public art installations in Providence, Rhode Island, Houston, Texas, and Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Troy Stanley is a sculptor currently living and working in Houston, Texas. Upon receiving his degree in sculpture from the University of Houston in 2005, Stanley began his professional career with a solo exhibition at Lawndale Art Center in Houston. In 2007 he attended the prestigious residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and shortly after attended the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center Residency in Nebraska. He is also the recipient of a Houston Arts Alliance Emerging Artist Grant.
